This month MoMoVan brings you an evening focused on SOCIAL MEDIA.

We say we are the best in the world for social and digital media. If Vancouver is truly a world-class hub for social and digital media, then we have a challenge ahead of us: how do we use the attention created by the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to our own benefit? If we are indeed the best at what we do, how do we use our talent, our expertise, our innovative technologies to engage the world?

The Olympics in February are a given. There are 15 Mondays left! The eyes of the world will be on Vancouver. In addition to the athletes and officials, visitors, business delegates and media who will be in Vancouver, it is estimated that another 3 billion from around the world will be watching the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

How do we tell stories about our lives, our innovations, our community before, during and after February 2010?

Join local experts from both traditional media and social media companies as we look at the tools that are available and how we should promote ourselves, our companies and Vancouver to the world. We have invited executives fromNow Public, Invoke Media, Laura Ballance Media Group and Canwest to share their insights. This promises to be one of the most exciting MoMoVan.

We’ve got the (virtual) goods. In the past couple of years, the virtual goods market has grown to $5.5 billion globally. The North American and European markets, which have traditionally lagged behind the Asian market, are now the fastest growing segments of the market and are estimated to be $700 million in 2009.

Hear an update about the Engage! Expo that took place last week in San Jose. Find out what is driving the rapid growth of the virtual goods market and where the virtual goods industry is heading in the future.

These applications, made possible by mobile broadband, are convergent and can make use of existing infrastructure, landlines and Wi-fi networks. They expand the reach of mobile from handsets to medical devices, vehicles, homes and basically anywhere that internet can reach. It may not be as sexy and visually exciting as mobile gaming and entertainment, but it makes money. Some of the most successful local companies in wireless operate in the mobile enterprise space. And who said making money was boring?

momovan (mmv): Congrats on being selected to be the new face of momovan.

Amielle Lake (AL): Thank you. It was a great event, and I got to keep my hat.

mmv: Is this your first time at a momovan event?

AL: Yes.

mmv: How did you hear about it?

AL: I got a phone call from WINBC asking if I could present at the Oct 6th event.

mmv: Were most of the faces in the room familiar? New?

AL: A bit of both. There was the comfort of knowing some folks and feeling at home and the opportunity to be introduced to others in the community. It was a great mix of business types, development types and investors. I also really liked that there were so many students, they provide a different dynamic and approach the issues in a different way. There weren’t too many reps from the sales and marketing side, but that really is just more a function of Vancouver than of the event itself.

mmv: Did you find the sessions useful?

AL: Yes. Panels are a great format and an excellent way to have a focused discussion. The set-up was a good for learning and for interacting in a meaningful way. I also enjoyed Ron’s tips. The evening itself was a good mix talking and networking as well as the more organized sessions where a lot of information can be disseminated in a short period of time.

mmv: Suggestions for the future?

AL: I think themed nights are a good way to focus on a specific topic and drill down enough to get useful information to take away. Keeping things a little shorter is good too. I stayed to the very end and really enjoyed the panel on mobile voting. But it was almost too much for a single evening and I felt badly that most people left and didn’t get to hear the last session.

mmv: What do you enjoy most about your day at Tagga?

AL: The people that I work with and the fact that there is always something new. When you are a start-up everything is pressing and you spend a lot of time with your team and your clients and you bond very quickly and get to know each other very well.

mmv: Okay, and now a few random questions for you. Are you from Vancouver?

AL: Almost. I was born in Toronto, but I was raised in Vancouver.

mmv: Do you ski or snowboard?

AL: Ski.

mmv: Favorite beer?

AL: Heffeweizen.

mmv: Will you come again?

AL: Yes!
